The 2nd Jornada Médica Internacional will bring together speakers from Brazil, Israel, and the United States to discuss technology and human-centered care in healthcare.

The event will take place from March 12 to 14 in Erechim, Rio Grande do Sul, with proceeds supporting the restoration of Hospital Israelita Leonardo Cohen, the first Jewish hospital built in Brazil, nearly a century ago.

Focused on innovation without losing sight of human care, the 2nd Jornada Médica Internacional will take place on March 12, 13, and 14 in Erechim, Rio Grande do Sul. Expected to welcome more than 600 participants, the event will feature speakers from Israel and the United States, along with experts from leading Brazilian institutions, universities, and hospitals such as Hospital Sírio-Libanês, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, and InCor, offering in-depth discussions on innovation and clinical practice. History and Purpose

The meeting was conceived in 2024 in memory of Hospital Israelita Leonardo Cohen, the first Jewish hospital in Brazil, active between 1929 and 1962. Designed by English engineers, the structure was run by German Jewish doctors fleeing Nazi persecution in Europe. Part of the funds raised this year will be directed toward restoring the building in the former Jewish Colony of Quatro Irmãos:

"Hospital Israelita Leonardo Cohen was the first Jewish hospital in Brazil. Its history stands as a symbol of resilience for the Jewish families who settled in northern Rio Grande do Sul. Restoring the building also helps recover the memory and historical importance of the settlers of Quatro Irmãos," says Sergio Lerrer, secretary of the Polo de Turismo Histórico Judaico de Quatro Irmãos e Região.

Event Themes

In its second edition, the conference will be held at Centro Cultural 25 de Julho (Rua Gaurama, 210, downtown Erechim), with a program focused on the evolution of medicine in Brazil and around the world. One of the highlights, on the 12th, is the panel “Challenges for Efficient Public Health”, aimed at professionals in the sector (City Hall, State and Union).

Diabetes and Oncology

On March 13, the program will feature the Diabetes and Cardiology Forum and the Oncology Forum. Featured speakers include:

• Marcelo Averbach, colon surgeon at Sírio Libanês and professor of Medicine at the University of São Paulo (USP);
• Nurit Yair, manager of the Oncology Department at Sheba Medical Center and The Jusidman Cancer Center, both in Israel;
• Sergio Roithmann, head of the Oncology Service at Hospital Moinhos de Vento and professor at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA).

On the final day of the conference, experts will take part in the New Frontiers of Medicine panel. Featured presenters include:

• André Machado, neurosurgeon and researcher at Cleveland Clinic in the United States;
• Cesar Mizrahi, neurosurgeon and specialist in complex spine surgery at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem.

Organizers expect Jornada Médica Internacional 2025 to welcome more than 600 participants over the three-day event, surpassing attendance from the 2024 edition. The event is organized by the Instituto Cultural Judaico Marc Chagall, the Prefeitura de Erechim and the Polo de Turismo Histórico Judaico de Quatro Irmãos e Região.

According to Lerrer, the medical conference also aims to highlight the natural beauty and tourism appeal of the Alto Uruguai region in Rio Grande do Sul, helping drive the local economy and visitor activity:
