AI and 3D Technology in Surgery: Highlights from Jornada Médica Internacional

Artificial intelligence and 3D technology in head and neck surgery are among the featured topics at Jornada Médica Internacional.

These topics will be explored by physicians Cezar José Mizrahi, spine neurosurgeon at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Israel, and André Machado, neurosurgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, in the United States. The event takes place from March 12th to 14th, in Erechim, in Rio Grande do Sul.

    Technological Advances in Medicine

Technological advances have been revolutionizing Medicine in Brazil and around the world. As a result, artificial intelligence, 3D imaging, and robotics have become essential tools in healthcare, improving precision, quality, and efficiency in diagnosis and surgery. These topics will be addressed during the 2nd Jornada Médica Internacional, which will feature neurosurgeons Cezar José Mizrahi, from Israel, and André Guelman Gomes Machado, from the United States, who are references in their areas of expertise. The conference takes place from March 12 to 14 in Erechim, Rio Grande do Sul.

The Role of AI in Surgery

Specialist in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, in Jerusalem, Mizrahi highlights that AI works as a kind of “professional colleague”, assisting in decision-making and surgical planning.

Despite the advances available in healthcare, the doctor regrets that, in Brazil, few hospitals are prepared to use such technologies, unlike what happens in Israel. The neurosurgeon has been working in this segment for 13 years:

"To give you an idea, here, in Israel, Health has been using spinal surgical robotics for over a decade. In Brazil, unfortunately, this is an instrument only available in reference hospitals, such as Albert Einstein, or in large universities and research centers, such as the University of São Paulo (USP)."

    3D Technology and Neurosurgery

André Machado, a specialist in functional surgery at Cleveland Clinic, shares Mizrahi's view. Both physicians will speak at Jornada Médica Internacional in Erechim on March 14 at Centro Cultural 25 de Julho.

The doctor highlights that, thanks to technological advances, several nations already use 3D technology in imaging tests, such as tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, ensuring greater precision and safety in results, especially in cases that require surgery:

"At Cleveland Clinic, we use Neurophysiology and Neuronavigation to increase the accuracy of results and, consequently, diagnoses. This is a trend that should continue expanding worldwide. Our panel in Erechim will address exactly that: the present and future of medicine through the lens of AI and advanced technology."

Machado treats patients with chronic pain and movement disorders, performs deep stimulation surgeries for Parkinson's disease and neurostimulation in recovery of motor function in patients who have suffered a stroke:

"What we see in Brazil as the future, in the United States is already a reality and is constantly evolving. Most American hospitals have multiple imaging and surgical planning equipment with 3D Technology. This greatly facilitates our work, in addition to offering better recovery conditions for the patient."

Hospital Israelita Leonardo Cohen and the Medical Conference

The 2nd Jornada Médica Internacional 2025 is organized by the Instituto Cultural Judaico Marc Chagall, the Prefeitura de Erechim and the Polo de Turismo Histórico Judaico de Quatro Irmãos e Região. Part of the funds raised will be used for the restoration of the Hospital Israelita Leonardo Cohen, the first of its kind built in Brazil, 96 years ago, in the former Jewish Colony of Quatro Irmãos.

In addition to speakers from different countries, the event will feature experts from highly relevant institutions, universities and hospitals in Brazil, such as Hospital Sírio-Libanês, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein and Instituto do Coração (InCor).
